More Info Regarding File Extension MSG
MSG file extensions are encoded with various data that is pertinent to the email message that it is associated with. For instance, the name ID or the email account address of the sender and the recipient would be included within the code of a MSG file. This is a necessity as the basic reason for sending an email message is to communicate with another computer user. As noted above, however, opening a MSG file with a program other than Outlook or Outlook Express will generally produce an unreadable file filled with either binary code or ASCII code.
As many Microsoft programs are actually compatible with one another, sometimes MSG files can be used in other programs from the Microsoft Office suite. They can be saved as a DOC file which can then be used in popular programs such as Excel, Word, Powerpoint and many other widely used Microsoft applications. However, this technique is usually reserved for more advanced computer users; those who are not familiar with converting MSG files to DOC files might find themselves hopelessly lost.
In addition to the data such as the sender the the recipient generally encoded within a MSG file, other data includes any attachments which may have been sent (not the actual attachment, but the file name of any attachments), the subject line, the message body and date and time stamps. All of this information is rendered in various types of code which cannot be understood outside of a Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express environment.
While the Microsoft email programs are the main ones that use the MSG file extension, a couple of other, non Microsoft programs have been created which can open up these files as well. These programs are generally far less popular than Outlook or Outlook Express, but it may be useful for some computer users to know that these programs can be compatible with MSG files. A couple of examples of programs that are usually compatible with the MSG file extension include OpenOffice, MSGconverter, OutlookEML and Outlookfiller. Many other programs may be available online which could potentially work with MSG files; this can usually be determined by studying the specifications of a particular program.
Errors involving the MSG file extension usually occur when a user erroneously attempts to import MSG files into an email client that does not support them. Popular online email programs such as Gmail and Yahoo mail do not support MSG files. Therefore, if a person attempts to use the online email program's import tool for a MSG file, an error message will result. Nothing irreversible will happen, but the messages will not be imported, converted or used. Other methods of importing these email messages will have to be employed, as the MSG file extension simply is incompatible with these types of email clients.
